FiddleBopper Ian Jones
Ian Jones has just joined FiddleBop, as our cello player. Yaaaaay!
Yes, you read that right: cello! Which is an instrument not often seen (or heard) in jazz-folk... It sounds great! We're eagerly awaiting the results of this ongoing musical collaboration!
As well as cello, Ian plays banjo and guitar, and he sings too. Originally from Canterbury in Kent, he comes from a Folkestone-based musical dynasty: Ian's father was a double bass player working in jazz clubs and dance bands in the 1960s and 70s, and his grandpa played drums and sang in dance bands.
Ian originally intended to be a classical guitarist, and went to music college in London in the late 1970. Despite a career as a classical guitarist not working out, he still has a love of the instrument and its repertoire.
Ian's path instead led him to work for EMI, where he eventually became a post production engineer. He has mastered and remastered hundreds of albums, from spoken word and theatrical recordings to pop and classical. Ian was equally at home remastering anything from back-catalogue classical recordings to K-Pop, and has used equipment from analogue, to digital editing, and so to hard disc editing on a DAW as we do today.
But Ian's love of playing music never fully faded, despite a period in the doldrums, when he came close to selling his guitar, banjo, and cello. So what happened? In the words of John Lennon, "Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans". And life happened to Ian, in the form of a move to Builth Wells in mid Wales, around eight years ago. Where he found himself literally surrounded by music.
Which meant, of course, that he had no choice but to dust off the instruments and start making music once again...
.
And now Ian is a very busy musician! As well as playing cello and singing for FiddleBop, Ian holds down a good number of other musical roles. He:
- Plays banjo and sings (and writes songs) for the Cardboard Box Thieves (currently resting)
- Is a member of blues and country band Disque Bleu: along with guitarist Julian Lewis, and Graeme Lamble of FiddleBop on drums, Ian plays bass guitar and sings
- Also has other playing and recording projects in progress
What a busy man! As well as all this musicianing, Ian owns and runs The Owls Bed and Breakfast in Builth Wells.
When he gets some spare time (!) Ian walks in the mid-Wales hills as much as possible. And sometimes, you might even see him riding a pony in the Bannau Brycheiniog (aka the Brecon Beacons) along with his wife Jo... ![]()
